• An anal fistula is a small tunnel like structure that connects an abscess or any of the infected glands inside the anus on the skin surrounding anus.
• There are numerous glands present inside the anus. When infection occurs in any of the gland, there occurs an abscess. Near about half of the anal abscesses develop into a fistula.
• There is skin irritation, pain, swelling and discomfort. The wound doesn’t resolve on its own.
• The treatment of anal fistula involves surgery.

CAUSES OF ANAL FISTULA

There are various glands present in the inner wall of anus. These glands produce mucus. Sometimes these glands get clogged leading to formation of an abscess. The abscess causes formation of a fistula.

Here are some other reasons which can lead to occurrence of anal fistula:

• Trauma
• Crohn’s disease
• Sexually transmitted diseases
• Tuberculosis
• Cancer treatment
• Diverticulitis

SYMPTOMS OF ANAL FISTULA

• Swelling and redness around anus
• Pain in the affected area
• Foul smelling drainage of pus from an opening around the anus
• Pain during defecation
• Bleeding
• Itching
• Fever, chills
• Fatigue
• Bowel incontinence

DIAGNOSIS OF ANAL FISTULA

• The doctor will do the complete thorough examination of the area.
• He will try to determine the depth or the path of the fistula.
• He may also suggest some of the tests to know the underlying cause of the disease:
• Anoscopy
• Ultrasound
• MRI
• Blood tests
• Colonoscopy

TREATMENT OF ANAL FISTULA

The treatment of anal fistula involves surgery. The procedure is called fistulotomy.
