• Bacterial vaginosis is inflammation of vagina due to overgrowth of naturally found bacteria in it. It causes change in normal pH of vagina.
• It can affect women of any age group but women in their reproductive years are more commonly affected.
• Bacterial vaginosis doesn’t cause any major health issue. But it can cause problems in pregnancy or in conceiving.
• It is the most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge in females. There occurs irritation in vagina and fishy odor comes from vagina.
• Bacterial vaginosis makes a female more susceptible to sexually transmitted infections.

CAUSES OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

• There are two types of bacteria present in vagina of females – good bacteria and bad bacteria. Good bacteria are lactobacilli which make the vagina slightly acidic. It prevents growth of harmful bacteria.
• If due to any reason, the number of lactobacilli drop, there occurs more growth of bad bacteria. It, then, causes bacterial vaginosis.

RISK FACTORS OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

The risk factors of bacterial vaginosis are:

• Having mutiple sexual partners
• Having unprotected sex
• Vaginal douching
• Having intra-uterine devices
• If vagina is not producing optimum amount of lactobacilli

SYMPTOMS OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

Most of the women with bacterial vaginosis don’t show symptoms. However, if present, following are the signs and symptoms of the disease:

• Foul smelling odor from vagina
• Vaginal itching
• Burning sensation during urination
• Thin, white, greyish discharge from vagina

COMPLICATIONS OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

The complications which arise with bacterial vaginosis are:

• Premature delivery
• Pelvic inflamatory diseases
• Sexually transmitted infections
• Increased risk of infections after gynaecological surgery

PREVENTION OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

Following are the ways which can help in reducing chances of contracting bacterial vaginosis are:

• Avoid douching
• Avoid unprotected sex
• Do not have multiple sexual partners
• Use mild, non-deodrant sanitary pads or tampons
• Wear cotton underwear

DIAGNOSIS OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

• The doctor will take complete medical history of the patient. He will ask about previous vaginal or sexual infections.
• He will do a pelvic examination.
• He may check vaginal secretions or vaginal pH.

TREATMENT OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS

The treatment of bacterial vaginosis includes the following medications:

• Metronidazole
• Clindamycin
• Tinidazole
• Secnidazole
