Clouding of the clear lens of the eye leading to visual impairments is called cataract and it is very common as the person starts getting older. Clouding interferes within the normal functioning of the retina which results in vision problems. The retina converts the rays that passes through lens into signals. It later on sends the signals to the optic nerve which carries them to the brain. Blurred and double vision , astigmatism and difficulty in seeing at nights are some common symptoms of cataract. It mostly arises with increasing age and it can be managed effectively by medications.
CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS:
Most cataracts develop due to aging or injury that changes the tissue which makes up the eye’s lens. some genetic disorders can increase the risk of cataract. Other factors that may increase the possibilities of cataract are :
- Old age
- Excessive exposure to sunlight
- Prolonged use of cortico steroid medication
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Ultraviolet radiation
- Vitamin C deficiency
- Previous eye surgery
WHAT IS THE PRIMARY SIGN OF CATARACT?
At first, cloudiness may affect only a little part of the eye’s lens and so people does not seem to be aware of their vision loss.

- Fading or yellowing of colours
- Increased halos around eyes
- Sensitivity to light and glare

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CATARCT?
These are the various varieties of cataract:
NUCLEAR CATARACT: When cataract has effects on the centre of the nucleus , it’s referred as nuclear cataract. It is usually related with myopia.
CORTICAL CATARACT: Cataracts that affect the edges of the lens is called cortical cataract and those that are more exposed to ultra violet rays or sunlight have higher risk of developing cortical cataract.
CONGENITAL CATARACT: These cataracts are mostly genetic or associated with intra uterine infection.
POSTERIOR SUBCAPSULAR CATARACTS: A posterior sub capsular cataract often interferes with the reading vision of yours, reduces your vision in bright light, and causes glare or halos around lights. These varieties of cataracts tend to progress faster than other types do.

Here are some ways which you may adopt to prevent the progress of cataract :
- Start wearing sunglasses whenever move out because excess ultra – violet rays can damage the retina and increase the possibilities of cataract.
- Go for regular checkups so that eye can be examined properly and diagnosis will be made at early stages.
- Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption
- Manage other health conditions like diabetes, hypertension etc.
