Dengue is a mosquito borne viral disease caused by dengue virus which is transmitted through a female mosquito Aedes aegypti. People who have dengue experience flu like symptoms. some people may suffer from severe complication associated with severe bleeding, organ impairment and plasma leakage. Dengue is a infectious disease also known as break bone fever. It can be easily prevented by avoiding water storage and using mosquito repellents etc.
WHAT CAUSES DENGUE?
It is caused by the dengue virus and is transmitted in humans through a mosquito called Aedes aegypti .
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF DENGUE?
- Muscle and joint pains
- Skin rash
- Severe headache
- Rose spots
- Fatigue
- Pain behind the eyes
- Swollen glands
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Sudden onset fever
In severe cases following symptoms can be seen:
- Vomiting
- Severe abdominal pain
- Breathlessness
- Restlessness
- Blood in vomit or stool
The incubation period of dengue ranges from 3-14 days.
DIFFERENT PHASES OF DENGUE:
After incubation period, dengue follows three phases: febrile, critical and recovery phase
FEBRILE PHASE:
- It has a time period of 2-7 days
- In this phase symptoms like muscle and joint pain , orbital pain, and fever occurs.
- Some patients have facial erythema in the first 24-48 hours after onset.
CRITICAL PHASE
- Varying degrees of plasma leakage into pleural and peritoneal spaces.
- Risk of developing shock and death. Patients with severe plasma leakage may have pleural effusions, ascites or hypoproteinemia.
- Patient can develop severe hemorrhagic manifestations, icluding hematemesis , stools with blood or menorrhagia.
CONVALESCENT PHASE
As the plasma leakage subsides , the patient enters the convalescent phase and begins to reabsorb extravasated IV fluids and pleural and abdominal effusions.
white cell count usually start to rise , followed by recovery of platelet count.
PREVENTION OF DENGUE
prevention depends on the control and prevention from the bites of the mosquito that transmits it. It can be prevented by adopting following methods:
- Proper disposal of solid waste and proper removal of artificial man made habitats that can hold water.
- Use of insecticides
- Wear long sleeved shirts and long pants to cover the whole body.
- Use mosquito repellents
- Keep your doors and windows closed to prevent the entry of mosquitoes in the house
- Avoid storing water for too long
- Educating neighbors and community about the risks of mosquito borne disease.

1. PLATFER TABLET:
