Folliculitis occurs when hair follicles become inflamed or infected. It can occur anywhere on the body where hair grows but is most common on the buttocks, arms, and legs. Usually, it is mild and clears up quickly.
Causes of folliculitis
1.Rubbing, shaving, heat, excessive moisture, or tight clothing can inflame follicles and make it easier for infection to set in. Infection may be caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other germs. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is the most common cause of bacterial folliculitis. This bacteria grows on many people’s skin and in their noses. Common causes include:
2.Very dry skin
3.Using an improperly disinfected hot tub or heated pool
5.Friction from sports equipment, casts, or braces
6.Heavy makeup, moisturizers, or oils that block follicles
7.Certain medications, such as steroids, hormones, and anticonvulsants
8.Plucking or waxing hair
What are the Symptoms of Folliculitis?
1.Red or white bumps around hair follicles
2.Itching, pain, or tenderness of the skin
3.Bumps that rupture and ooze pus
4.Fever and feeling sick (in the case of severe infection)
Different Types of Folliculitis
1.Superficial Folliculitis: Involves just part of the follicle (most common type).
2.Deep Folliculitis: Involves the entire follicle and can become severe.
3.Hot Tub Folliculitis: A bacterial infection caused by a hot tub or heated pool that is not disinfected well. This condition presents under areas covered by swimsuits.
For how long does it exists?
Most cases of folliculitis will begin clearing up within two or three days, and disappear completely after a week. If your bumps are becoming increasingly red and painful, or begin to ooze pus this indicates that your folliculitis is increasing in severity. This may be accompanied by a fever. If this occurs you should visit a doctor.
Medicines are prescribed based on the following types of folliculitis:
1.Bacterial folliculitis: Topical clindamycin ointment, oral antibiotics
2.Fungal folliculitis: Antifungal cream for external application
3.Reaction to medication: Retinoids
How is folliculitis diagnosed?
Your doctor or other health care provider will examine your rash or bumps. They will also ask you when your symptoms began and try to understand the cause. If your folliculitis is very severe or has come back repeatedly, they may order lab tests to test for serious infections such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).
What are the risk Factors?
Individuals with a compromised immune system or a chronic condition that increases your risk of severe infection should visit a doctor in the event of folliculitis.
1.Pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps): Shaved facial hairs grow back into the skin.
2.Shingles: A painful, itchy rash caused by reactivation of the herpes zoster (chicken pox) virus.
3.Acne vulgaris: Acne caused by the blockage and inflammation of sebaceous glands and hair follicles.
4.Acne rosacea: A rash and bumps on the face.
5.Heat rash: Blocked pores which trap sweat beneath the skin.
