GASTRITIS

gastritisInflammation of the gastric mucosa of the stomach is gastritis. the mucosal lining of the stomach normally protects it from gastric acid action. it’s either acute or chronic type. indigestion, nausea and vomiting are some of the common symptoms of this disease. Incidence of this disease is highest in sixth and fifth decade of the life and women are less likely to get this disease as compared to men.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS OF GASTRITIS:

  • Bacterial infection
  • Acute alcoholism
  • Age related
  • Auto immune disorders
  • Digestive disorders like Crohn’s disease
  • Food poisoning
  • Food items including excess paprika, clove and pepper
  • Continuous use of pain killers
  • Excess intake of spicy food
  • Stress
  • Regular use of NSAIDs
  • Cancer treatment

HOW WILL I KNOW IF I HAVE GASTRITIS?

When gastritis develops because of contaminated food, diarrhea occurs within 5 hours of indigestion. Gastritis doesn’t have any noticeable symptoms but some of the common symptoms are:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Gastric reflux
  • Belching
  • Severe nausea and vomiting
  • hematemesis ( vomit mixed with blood)
  • Indigestion
  • discomfort in epigastrium
  • Tennderness present in the abdominal region.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GASTRITIS?

Acute gastritis refers to the sudden onset of inflammation of gastric mucosa while chronic gastritis refers to the long lasting inflammation of the stomach lining. Chronic gastritis further occurs in three different forms:

  • Superficial gastritis
  • Atrophic gastritis
  • Hypertrophic gastritis.

DIAGNOSIS:

  • Diagnosis is usually based on a detailed history of food intake, medications taken and any disorder related to gastritis.

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF GASTRITIS?

Atrophic gastritis: Chronic inflammation can lead to loss of boththe stomach lining and glands.

Pernicious  anemia: Erosive gastritis  can cause chronic bleeding, which in turn can cause anemia.

Peptic ulcers:  ulcers can form in the lining of the stomach and duodenum

Gastric cancer : The risk of both benign and malignant growths increases in people with gastritis.

WHAT ARE THE PREVENTIONS OF GASTRITIS?

  1. Avoid taking spicy and junk food
  2. Start eating healthier and take multiple small meals throughout the day
  3. Reduction in alcohol consumption
  4. Doing exercises that helps in stress reduction
  5. Stop taking caffeine
  6. Stop taking too much pain killers
  7. Go for low fat meals
  8. Take foods with low acidity

HOW CAN I CURE GASTRITIS AT HOME?

  • Follow anti- inflammatory diet
  • Drink coconut water as much as you can
  • Use of aloe vera
